Zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch plastic surgery is a common plastic and cosmetic surgery. Like other cosmetic surgeries it is safe. The complication rate of zygomatic boen and zygomatic arch plastic surgery is lower than other principles of surgeries. However like other surgeries this surgery do have some risks of surgical complication and unsatisfactory rate. If it happens the patient and surgery provider should take a good care of it and treat the complication in time, not to spend time on accusing each other, avoiding further damage.

complication of zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch plastic surgery
Displacement of the zygomatic bone and the zygomatic arch after reduction zygoma plastic surgery. Though there are plate and screw fixation applied the left side of the zygomatic bone and the zygomatic arch are moved downwardly as the frontal ostectomy weakened the front part of the zygomatic complex.

Complications of zgyoamtic bone and the zygomatic arch plastic surgery can be divided into general complications and specific complications. The general complications indicate complications which any surgery could face, such as intro and post surgery hemorrhage, surgical site infections, scaring and improper surgical incision healing etc. The happening of general complication is connected to the surgical trauma and every surgery may face the risk of general complications.

The specific complications indicate complications that are unique to zygomtic bone and zygomatic arch plastic surgery. The happening of these complications are related to the anatomical aspect of the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch, the surgical procedure and technique etc. These complications include post operation displacement of the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch, bone disunion of the zygomatic arch, weakening of the zygomatic bone, middle face soft tissue sagginess, zygomatic branch of the facial nerve injury, damage of the front and lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, iatrogenic chronic maxillary sinusitis, temporal mandibular joint disorder(TMD), zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch defect, asymmetry of the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch and so on.

General complications can recover easily under proper care, without much interference to the final result. Specific complications may post some negative effects on the final result, this effect may be the reason of unsatisfactory. From author's clinical experience the most common complains regarding zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch plastic surgery are asymmetry of zygomatic region after surgery. However most candidate's zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch are more symmetric than before the surgery. The patients rather ignore their natural asymmetry but couldn't tolerate the minor post operative asymmetry, believing that a cosmetic surgery could make the face perfectly symmetric. The cosmetic candidates should always be aware that no paired organs or body parts of the human body are perfectly symmetric. As a matter of fact if a person's face is perfectly symmetric he or she may doesn't look beautiful. Following are a list of some possible complications related to zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch plastic surgery.

1.Displacement or defect of the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch after reduction plastic surgery

The relatively severe complication of the zygoma reduction plastic surgery is the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch displacement or defect. The complication is believed having some connections with the improper selection of surgical method or surgical procedure and deformity or weakening of the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch. This complication is very popular among whose patients who seek revision surgeries after zygoma reduction plastic surgery. Most patients who suffer from this complication underwent frontal part ostectomy zygoma reduction surgery because when the supporting front part of the zygomatic bone been cut open and pushed inward the free bone segment tend to rotate downward at the same time.

2.Facial sagginess after zygoma reduction plastic surgery

After front part ostectomy of the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch the strength of the zygomatic complex is damaged. The gravity and the strong masseter muscle force can pull the bone and the attached soft tissue down forming facial sagginess. Even with rigid fixation applied on the osteotomy site some patients is still going to have a dripping change on their face. When this happens the bone and the attached soft tissue of the middle face (e.g. apple muscle) dislocated downwardly giving a tired and aging look. Once the sagginess happened it is difficult to treat. So the best of all is to avoid this kind of complication from happening.

3.Facial nerve injury

4.Maxillary sinus injury or chronic sinusitis

5.Disfuntion of mouth movement

6.Injury of obit bone

7.Temporal mandibular joint injury or temporal mandibular joint disorder

8.No effect or asymmetry
